Year Five

This term in Year 5 we will be focusing our learning in English around ‘conquering the monster stories’. We will produce poems and write our very own monster story where we will be focussing on our language choice to add description and create suspense. Grammar and punctuation will be taught within these lessons. Each week we will also be given spellings to learn which we will be tested on, on a Friday.

Our class texts this term will be Beowulf and Percy Jackson.

In Maths we will be extending our knowledge on fractions. This will include finding equivalent fractions, ordering and comparing and adding, subtracting and multiplying fractions.

We will also continue to work on our times tables up to 12 x 12. We will be tested on these on a Friday.

We have a very busy term ahead in Science. To begin with we will be investigating the effects of air resistance, followed by understanding how pulleys, gears and levers affect forces, leading into a special investigation for Science week.

Later in the term we will begin to study animals and humans, understanding their life cycles and how they reproduce.

In history we will be stepping back in time to understand trade and slavery.

This term we are continuing to learn our Brass and Woodwind instruments. Lessons are on a Monday afternoon.

Please join us for our special performance assembly on: 26th March 2018 at 2.30pm

Art / DT

In art we will be producing a collage on a painted background depicting the history of the NHS and showing all the different types of jobs you could do within the NHS. Our art work may even be entered for the ‘Step into the NHS’ competition.

Also, later this term our artwork for the recent DotArt competition we took part in will be displayed online. Keep a look out for when voting opens!

In PE, we will be taking part in Multi-sports workshops on a Wednesday afternoon. Later this term we will also be learning to ride our bikes safely and gaining our Level 1 and 2 awards.

Indoor PE kit: black shorts, pumps and a white t-shirt.

Outdoor PE kit: black joggers, trainers, a white t-shirt and a jumper.

This term we will be studying Judaism, the Ten Commandments and special celebrations.

We will also revisit the Easter Story to further our understanding or Christian celebrations.

As the NHS turns 70 we will be taking part in a special program where we will be learning all about it’s history and what opportunities there are for our future careers. Did you know that there are over 350 different roles within the NHS?

This term we will also be taking part in a special competition organised by Cheshire Police Service. We will be looking at both online safety and street safety to produce a radio advert explaining to others how to stay safe.
